Ms. Hermsen - Room 13
Welcome to first grade!
This is my fourteenth year teaching at St. Vincent de Paul School. I'm very excited to be a part of this faith community. Our classroom has two part time associates. Mrs. Denise Johnston is with us in the mornings and Ms. Pam Botos is in the afternoons.
I received my BS degree from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. My first two years of teaching were in a K-4 classroom in Bruno, NE. Then I made the transition to Omaha teaching first grade at St. Joan of Arc. The following year I moved to St. Bernard School teaching first grade and later fourth grade. I received my MS in Reading from the University of Nebraska - Omaha.
First Grade is an exciting year as students become more independent. They develop organization skills having their own desks, using folders to organize work, and having assignment notebooks. Working on social and study skills is an important part of first grade. Students will expand their reading skills as they learn story elements and author's purpose. We will write stories and learn about nouns, verbs, and adjectives. In math, we'll learn addition and subtraction facts to 18 as well as double digit addition and subtraction, telling time, count money, and measurement. Most important of all is growing in our faith as we learn more about being a child of God, not only during religion class, but in all we do.
